Storytelling with data

“A picture is worth a thousand words.” We all know the saying. People are much more receptive to visuals and graphs than plain data. In this course, the learner will be working on effectively creating the right visual that supports their messages. While making sure that the message they are communicating fits the story they are telling.

Learning objectives

Use the most effective visuals to convey your message.

Remove clutter, provide focus and direct the attention of your audience to your key messages.

Module overview

The basis of storytelling is your storyline. How do you keep your storyline the focal point of your presentation? And how do you ensure your slides convey the right message? Our plethora of examples will help the learner to see slides and visualisations differently, and with our chart guide, they are sure to stay on top of their learnings long after this module as well.

We will start off with an often overlooked element of our slides: the title. When creating slides, we often tend to focus on the content, especially regarding data. What a waste, because a good title guides the audience to the essence of the slide and into the storyline as a whole.

Next, we will dive into the charts that are being used to visualise the data. With several exercises and examples, the learner will experience how to choose the right chart and how to make it work for them. To finish off, they will work on improving a slide of their own, employing everything they’ve learned.
