The four strategies
Ground rules
Ground rules have to do with everything you organize to minimize too much stress & optimize energy balance. Increase the collaboration with your team members to encourage them to manage their stress and energy. Examples are: team breaks, daily standup, shorter meeting times, daily team walks, flexible working hours, focus blocks, team challenges to set clear boundaries etc.
1:1
Asking for help is a sign of strength, however, not everyone always feels that way. The best way to fend off stress is to show that you care. In 1:1’s show your team members that you listen; to their problems, challenges and that you want to help to find solutions. And also share your challenges every now and then. These planned moments with your team members help to minimize barriers and in turn it increases productivity.
Role Modelling
The behaviour you show will largely impact your team! Your team members are influenced by your well-being. Promote activities and ground rules that manage stress & energy and demonstrate them. Remember: we can’t help others until we first are aware of our own stress & energy levels and how we are managing them.
Micro climate
We can’t always influence corporate culture but we can influence the climate in our team. Do we talk about stress & energy management? Do we recognize and openly discuss too much stress when we signal this? Do you (as a leader) support people to open up about this? Does everyone have the same idea about stress & energy management. If not, do you know what ideas are there in the team? Questions like this help to set up the right team climate.
